High Tech High’s web presence had grown into 26 aging WordPress sites that were difficult to update and out of step with the network today. In under six months, we needed to modernize the design, condense the system into 19 sites, and serve families, students, and staff across every school. The platform also had to protect K12 privacy, support a directory of 600+ staff that changes weekly, and share student projects and announcements without flattening site level needs.
Modernize "19 school" sites "into" one "shared" platform "for" families
We rebuilt the High Tech High web ecosystem as a WordPress multisite, condensing 26 sites into 19 for 16 schools and support sites. We refreshed the logo and created shared templates to improve mobile use and publishing. The platform supports shared student projects, athletics updates, and a 600+ staff directory while keeping school specific resources distinct. Partnering with the IT team, we replaced the legacy design in a rapid launch and now provide ongoing monitoring, updates, and support.
Key Takeaways
High Tech High’s redesign shows that large K12 networks can modernize in under six months without losing each school’s identity.
Start with scale reality: audit and back up content early, then build templates that can hold thousands of pages and roles.
Architect for sharing: a multisite model lets projects and staff profiles live once, then publish consistently everywhere.
Ship with care: privacy conscious defaults, mobile ready navigation, and clear workflows help schools update safely at speed.
Sustainment is the product: partnered IT support plus ongoing monitoring and maintenance keep the platform reliable year after year as needs change.
